Wednesday 17th June Day 30
It was a surprisingly quiet night, mind you nothing much was going to happen until the first ferry of the day, the other surprise was that we were on the road early at about 10am which is well before our usual start times and it also meant that we would be able to listen to Pop Master while on the move, it was a good job we were on the road early’ish as we had optimistically planned a 100km route with a couple of stops on the way, 100km isn’t that far but our route was going to take us down some roads that were made for horse and carts and others would twist and turn up and down through the mountains, it didn’t sound like fast going to me, especially when you get stuck behind tractors, stop at view points to look at the Ocean and road surfaces that are not related to travelling fast unless you are In a rally car. Mentioning rallying this weekend will be the Donegal rally which leaves us with a bit of a dilemma and a couple of questions, do we double back to watch the rally which starts on Friday and finishes on Sunday, I haven’t seen a real life stage rally for years and I probably won’t see the Donegal rally again the stages are well spread out so we would have to pick the ones we could get to and based on previous years it is expected that the roads will be rammed and at times impassable, when we used to go to watch rally’s we would get to a stages hours before the cars were due, find a suitable vantage point an sit and wait in all kinds of weathers and when we crewed for Ian we hardly ever saw the actual stage just the possible devastation the car may have been subject to, while we waited for them to arrive at the service area, not after every stage I hasten to add and it was great fun. So there is the question do we head back and use 4 of the remaining days, do we want to sit in traffic jams for god knows how long, do we want to arrive at stages and wait for the cars to start going past and the big question is that as the weather forecast says constant rain for all three days, do we want to stand in boggy fields in the peeing down rain for hours, the younger me would say bring it on, and so should the current one, but that one is thinking about it and doesn’t really fancy the idea of getting absolutely soaking wet. We checked weather forecast and it wasn’t looking great, that made up our minds to continue on our route further north towards Malian Head which is the start point for the Wild Atlantic Way but for us it will be the end of the route, it was early afternoon and time for us to find a place to stop. We had originally planned for a pub stop over as we fancied romantic evening in a restaurant, or possibly we didn’t want to cook, Barb had found one that had a bit more to offer as it had loos, showers and electricity for €15 plus what you would spend on food and drinks. We gave Syd the address and off we went, we had a couple of stops to look at the scenery and about an hour later by which time we had a bit of a change of minds as Barb had found a free stopover about 500yds from the pub which was next to a derelict church and a graveyard, we had a look at the pub and then went to the graveyard, there was a great view over a lough. The idea of a romantic evening meal while sipping a glass of Merlot, well that idea lost out to a free stopover, a view overlooking the lough, quiet neighbours and saving 100 euro, anyway what’s wrong with cheese toasties and a beer, cheapskate, that was about it so let’s see what happens tomorrow.
