Thursday 11th June Day 24
Hey guess, yep it’s raining and that made our minds up to move on to our next stops as we may as well be driving between places when it’s raining and stopping at places when it’s hopefully not raining, today’s end destination was 2 to 3 hours away and we also had a couple of stops to make on the way. The first destination was Aasleagh water falls which was only 30 minutes away, what can I say yes they are very nice and very fast flowing water over the rocks but we have friends in Norway and New Zealand that might question water falls, photos taken our next stop was Westport which was a town on our route. It was a busy small town and finding a parking space was proving a bit of a mission and unsuccessful visits to a couple of car parks, Barb spotted a space down a side street but you could only stay for 2 hours but you got the first one free and the second was only €1 complete bargain. Two hours was going to be fine as we were only going to have a walk around and then head off, another town with lots of independent shops and plenty of bars and restaurants, not that many tourists, apart from us, here that we have seen in other towns which ment that the shops were selling day to day stuff rather than tourist tat, yes there were a few but not as many as in other towns. After a walk around we headed to the harbour where we had a coffee before heading off to the final destination of the day, well we hoped that it will be the final stop as it’s beach stop over at Achill Island beach which looked great but the last review on the Search for sites app was in August last year so we weren’t sure if you could still stay there and the only way to find out was to go and have a look. Move forward an hour and we arrived at the beach and there were two other vans already there and no signs saying no overnight parking that was ok with us. It’s a great spot right on the beach overlooking the Ocean, when I say beach there is no sand in sight as it’s a pebble beach with large pebble’s, there are some water falls from the hillside which isn’t surprising due to the amount of rain there has been. One of the vans was a local guy taking photographs with a massive lens obviously attracted to a camera but that was dwarfed by the expensive lens, he left early leaving just the other van and us. I had been outside to have a look at the Ocean, haven’t seen it before, and the scenery which is beautiful and hopefully we can have some sunshine tomorrow to make it look more beautiful. While I was outside I noticed a number of spent shotgun cartridges lying around, now did that mean move on or stay, we decided to stay but I did put the PIR lights and the cameras on the van for a bit of security, not that they will be much use against a shotgun but at least we would have some advanced warning. We will have to wait until tomorrow morning to see if staying was a good idea, if it wasn’t then you might find out on the news not from us, hopefully we will let you know how things went tomorrow.
