Sunday 14th June Day 27

No other vans joined us during the night, very quiet until those tourist types started arriving but we were parked at the far end, away from the car parking bays which meant that we didn’t shoot off immediately after they arrived, we were back in no rush mode, thinking about it I don’t think we have had a rush moment since we arrived. Our rough plan was to head to Donegal with a couple stops along the way, the first of which was Mullaghmore which is on the WAW route must see places, when we finally got our act together and before we left, we walked up to the waterfall and yes it is a waterfall, but on our travels we have been very fortunate to have visited some countries with Waterfalls and I guess this has made others small in comparison. Mullaghmore was only 30 minutes away and it wasn’t long before we found a parking space and walked into the village. There isn’t much in the village but it is very pretty with a couple of bars, cafes and an ice cream parlour, there is a small harbour with crystal clear water and a beautiful 3km horse shoe beach, the village is famous for a few of things, Classiebawn Castle which overlooks the village and was Lord Mountbatten’s holiday home, now that was some holiday home, the harbour was also where Mountbatten and two of his family were killed when his boat was blown up in the harbour. Another thing that the village is famous for is that it is globally known as one of the best and heaviest big-wave surfing locations on the planet and apparently the waves can reach up to 15 metres, for us being here today that seemed mad as the Ocean is flat calm with only ripples of water coming onto the beach. I guess that shows you why you should have the uttermost respect for the sea oh and oceans as they can change from being your friend and fun to being extremely scary and I guess fun for surfers. This beautiful village totally changed our plans for the day as we just stayed there for the rest of the day, evening and night, in the afternoon we met a fellow CV (Glo) owner Stephen Gilmore who is a member as are we of the CV owners facebook page. We chatted for a while discussing our vans, places they have taken us to, future travel plans and the village, Stephen is from the other part of Ireland and was able to give us some places to visit as we head further north. In the early evening we sat outside a hotel bar having a drink while watching adults and children have loads of fun jumping off the harbour wall into the crystal clear water, some the adults would then visit the sauna on the harbour wall and then back into the water. Later on we went for something to eat at the other bar, Barb ordered beef and Guinness pie and as we are as close to the sea that a fish could have jumped out of sea and straight into the kitchen, I ordered fish, Barbs pie was delicious as for my fish I would have liked for its dad to be on my plate, you know when you see pictures of a long lightly battered fish with crispy golden batter curled at each end and they look fantastic, well this wasn’t like that but hey it was alright and it might have just been my expectations. Next it was to find somewhere to park for the night and there were a couple of options firstly the hotel car park with absolutely no view, no facilities and at a cost of €15, we have stayed overnight in a number of car parks for free, so that one is out, Stephen had told us that if we went around to the top of the headland there were a number of parking areas overlooking, guess what, yep that’s right the Ocean. The first one already had about 6 motorvans parked up and was full, the second was on a bit of a slope apart from the bottom of it where some guy was sitting in his Audi, god knows what he was doing but he eventually did one and we grabbed the only level part, two other vans joined us later but they must of had their blood rushing to their heads or their feet all night alternatively they rolled out of bed every time they turned over, but hey we were fine listening to the gentle waves below us, wow that was an exciting day for you but you did get to find out things about Mullaghmore that you might not of even heard of, let’s see what happens tomorrow.
