Saturday 13th June Day 26

My hopes were for needing binoculars and the long lens on my camera to view the sea life in the ocean well unfortunately the ocean had  a totally different idea as although it wasn’t raining it was still blowing a proper hoolie, not quite as gale force as yesterday but it is still a proper hoolie with  white capped waves as far as the eye can see with the closer ones come crashing onto the rocks, no self respecting basking shark would be lying around in these waves, if there was one it would be a bobbing shark. Cameras, lenses and binoculars are all back in their cases ready for the next opportunity, as it’s wasn’t raining we are going to go to the top of the headland to look at the rock formations and the ocean, hang on can’t we see the ocean from where we are parked, yes we can but we would see it in different bay in a different direction. After getting dressed in suitable clothing, footwear, hats and ensuring we had ample supplies we headed off on our attempt to reach the summit, ok yes that is a bit of an exaggeration as it was less than 1k up a hill but it was windy, when we get there, the cliff formations are impressive, the most impressive was Dun Briste a 45 metre tall colossal sea stack which provides predator free sanctuary for puffins, kittiwakes and cormorants. The fishermen that arrived last night were still there fishing from the cliffs that must have 100 to 200 feet above the ocean, probably wasn’t much use us taking our £10 extending spinning rods with us. One of them was not at all happy as he had got his tackle stuck to something at to bottom of the ocean, it must have been painful for him to think that he had no option other than to cut his line and loose his tackle. That could have been the end to his fishing for the day. We returned to Glo a bit windswept and readied ourselves to set off for our next destination which was Sligo with a short stop at Ballina the whole drive was only about one and half hours and we had planned to stop at Sligo for the night. Ballina first stop which didn’t actually end up as a stop it more of a drive through that we classed as a visit, on to Sligo and Barb had found a free park up very close to the town centre, Syd made a hard job of directing us to the park up and eventually after two tours of the town centre he finally sorted himself out and found it. Next was a walk into the town to have a look around and can you believe a visit to Penny’s aka Primarny don’t ask, we had a bit of a plan that we would go music hunting in the evening and had a look around for suitable venue it became obvious that a number of people both male and female had been out early and had peaked a bit too early but this wasn’t going to stop them going back to their various hotels getting changed and then coming out for round two. This made up our minds that staying in Sligo wasn’t going to be a good idea, we did have a back up plan and this was only 30 minutes from the town, we headed off to Glencar lough which also had a waterfall that was supposed to be worth a visit. When we got there the car park was full of them there tourists and a couple of motorvans, we found a temporary spot and waited for the tourists to leave, in the end the other two vans left as well, I know that Glo needs a wash but there was no need to be snobby, that was it just us in a large car park overlooking the lough, it was going to be a quiet one with no waves crashing on to rocks, just a couple of sheep in the field next to use, then it was a bit though not a lot of planning for tomorrow which you will find out about tomorrow.

Stop over Glencar lough car park
